What Is Invisalign and How Does It Work

Invisalign is a clear aligner system that moves teeth using a sequence of removable trays instead of fixed brackets and wires. Each tray is made to your own measurements from a digital scan of your mouth.

You wear each aligner for one to two weeks before moving to the next in the series. Every tray applies gentle pressure to move specific teeth by around 0.2 to 0.3mm, so the sequence gradually works your teeth towards their planned final position.

How Invisalign Differs From Fixed Braces

Fixed braces are bonded to your teeth for the whole of treatment. Invisalign aligners are removable, so you take them out to eat, drink anything other than water, and clean your teeth normally.

That flexibility comes with responsibility. Aligners only move teeth while they are being worn, so treatment depends on you wearing them for 20 to 22 hours a day. Small tooth-coloured attachments are usually bonded to some teeth to help the aligners grip and control movement.

We check your teeth, gums and bite, then take a 3D digital scan. Any decay or gum disease is treated before aligner therapy begins.

Step 2: Your Digital Plan

We map every stage of tooth movement and show you a preview of your projected result, alongside a fixed quotation, before treatment begins.

Step 3: Wearing Your Aligners

You change to a new aligner every one to two weeks and attend review appointments so we can check progress against the plan.

Step 4: Retention

Once your teeth are in position, we fit a hidden wire retainer and provide night-time removable retainers, both included in your price.
